Following a massive Congress at which he imparted a special message to Australian Scientologists on their unique responsibility for Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard rolled out something of even greater moment on the 1st Melbourne ACC. For with several routes mapped to Clear, he returned to that higher goal of Operating Thetan whose potentials he charted in the Philadelphia Doctorate Course and Scientology 8‑8008. Drawing on subsequent discoveries, he had not only uncovered the primary obstacle to OT attainment—indeed, to any case gain—but had shattered that barrier with the technology of Overts and Withholds, enabling any being to achieve the central component in case progress—Responsibility. From the road to OT and how it depends on the shifting of valences, to the anatomy and handling of individuation, and from the relationship between withholds and an apparency of “no bank,” to the universe of a thetan, here is the technology that opened the gates to ascending levels of spiritual freedom and, ultimately, OT itself. As to what these discoveries foretold, Mr. Hubbard declared, “With the 1st Melbourne ACC, we begin a new era in Scientology—greater, broader and more successful than anything we have experienced before.”
“Just get right in there and audit! You can’t hear what the pc said, well, put your ear over close to his face! And he seems to be trying to blow or something of the sort or appears very nervous, well, hold him in the chair! And you don’t think he’s listening to you very good, give him a solid comm line of an arm.
But you’re an auditor and as such you are not an unimportant person and as such your interest in the case is essential. And that’s first, paramount and foremost and you’re going to get the most auditing done by auditing! You understand?” —L. Ron Hubbard
In September 1959, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev was in the United States. Despite the apparent cooling of tensions between the world’s two “great powers” that had led to this meeting with US President Eisenhower, the Russian leader startled his American hosts with a blunt and brutal speech on the possibility of nuclear war. And indeed, it was a threat that continued to loom large in people’s minds and in the culture, dramatized in the movie, On the Beach, which envisioned a planet devastated by World War III.
Yet, as portrayed in that movie, there was one part of the world that, at least temporarily, survived the holocaust—Australia. And Australia was very much in focus when L. Ron Hubbard spoke of the Southern Hemisphere as the only area that would ever stand a chance of survival in an atomic war—provided it were self-sufficient—because such a war would most likely occur in the Northern Hemisphere. What was more, the nation was home to a thriving and fast-expanding field of Scientologists, with the HASI Australia even predicting in its magazine, Communication, that “maybe Australia will produce the first all-Scientology culture.”
So it was that early in November 1959, Mr. Hubbard left England and, after a stop in Calcutta, landed in Melbourne on 5 November to deliver a Congress imparting the responsibility Australian Scientologists must take for the world at large. And considering it was the first ever to be presented by him in Australia, the turnout was—as one local publication described—“a giant Congress” before hundreds of wildly enthusiastic Scientologists and their friends.
Then again, and whereas he did deliver a very special message to Australian Scientologists on their pivotal importance to the future of all beings on this planet, that was but the start of what he would lay before them. Because, as was traditional, he had also scheduled an ACC. It began on 9 November at 157 Spring Street, headquarters of HASI Australia, and was attended by a group of 40 select auditors from both Australia and New Zealand. And as those auditors would soon discover, what this ACC represented was an entirely new direction:
“The basic text of this course is Scientology 8-8008. The first lectures which immediately precede this course were the Philadelphia Lectures of fall 1952—64 hours of lecture. They’re the immediate lectures which instantly precede this course. So, you see, we’ve done an awful jump on the time track. Do you see that?”
As for what Mr. Hubbard communicated, and just what it meant to return to 1952 and the Philadelphia Doctorate Course, it was summed in the goal of Operating Thetan. For having charted and mapped the potentialities of a thetan at native state, he had spent the subsequent years undercutting the current state of Man to develop processes that reached all cases and procedures that all auditors could apply. As a result, the overriding purpose had become the certain accomplishment of Clear for the vast majority who could not readily achieve this state and, hence, for whom rehabilitation of OT skills was beyond reach. But now, with several routes researched and codified—and which were producing Clears routinely and with certainty—he could return to that higher goal of Operating Thetan. Indeed, he had uncovered the primary obstacle that lay right across the path to OT—or for that matter, across the path of any case gain. While as to its importance:
“Now, you’re processing against a definition and the definition is ‘willing and knowing cause over life, matter, energy, space and time,’ which would of course include postulates, considerations and thetans. And that’s the definition of an OT.”
In point of fact, and as Mr. Hubbard told those students, the only route to OT was through Responsibility. And in this 1st Melbourne Advanced Clinical Course, he set forth the monumental technology to achieve that core component in all case progress—specifically, the technology of Overts and Withholds:
- Valence Shifting—how the road to OT depends on shifting of valences;
- Rule of the Weak Valence—what it is, why it must be handled and how;
- Individuation—its source, and the role of communication in knocking it out;
- Judgment—the ability to evaluate relative importances and how freedom depends on it;
- Ability to Make Postulates Without Consequence—its relationship to the rehabilitation of OT;
- Bad Experiences—how they erase on the overt, not the motivator;
- Principal Incidents on the Track—the full details, including how they create ridges and their location and handling;
- Tone Arm—how to bring it down and to a Clear meter read.
Summarizing it all, what he had provided was a technology that not only spans all types of auditing and underlies case gain at all levels, but shatters the very barriers that lie in the path of every being as he ascends toward ever-greater levels of spiritual freedom. Thus, when postulating all that meant, L. Ron Hubbard would thereafter speak in terms of a brand-new look leading to a brand-new Earth.
It has been my ambition for a very long time to be able to say to any human being on Earth that they could walk up to any organization of Scientology, whether it was a Center, a City Office or a Central Organization—be able to walk in the front door and at the end of some, well, you could even say a nebulous number of hours of processing, emerge out of that front door Clear. —L. Ron Hubbard
As Scientology expands ever more deeply and broadly across the planet, the purpose remains what it has always been—to Clear every being on Earth. But although the technical procedures have long existed to reach that target, so momentous an undertaking requires something else as well. Specifically, the means to ensure that regardless of whether a session takes place in Los Angeles, London, Johannesburg or Keokuk, what auditors deliver to their preclears is the exact, correct technology, applied down to the last comma of the HCOB.
The need to accomplish that degree of duplication brings into focus the paramount importance of Scientology organizations. For upon the successful execution of their functions depends whether Man goes free. In this definitive lecture on how orgs fulfill their supreme responsibilities, L. Ron Hubbard not only reveals the crucial link between technology and organization but, within that relationship, the accomplishment of World Clearing.
The reason life is life and people are together and grass grows and trees grow and apparently the rain falls and everything else, is because it helps somebody. —L. Ron Hubbard
Help pervades every part of life. Yet few people realize the degree to which it determines their survival. For the willingness to give and receive help lies at the foundation of all human reactions and behavior.
How does one increase a person’s confidence, improve his ability to communicate with others and heighten his interest in life? The answers all start with help, and they are contained in a series of techniques so effective they can practically “awaken the dead.”
Indeed, help runs so deeply in human beings that even disabilities, accidents, criminality and social disturbance can be understood within its frame of reference. Thus, quite in addition to their benefits for a single individual is the enormous value of these discoveries for communities as a whole. A society that understands and applies the principles L. Ron Hubbard delineates will accomplish a tremendous resurgence in the capabilities of its people, thereby elevating the entire civilization. Here, then, are newly discovered and powerful truths with an almost unlimited potential for good.
As the 1950s passed into history, the 1960s roared into life. At the State of Man Congress, L. Ron Hubbard had set the whole of Scientology on course for OT, announcing the breakthrough of Responsibility and the technology of Overts and Withholds. The very next day, he began lecturing auditors on the Hubbard Clearing Scientologist Course: “Today you’re auditing cases and you’re auditing them on the hottest buttons there are in cases and it requires you to be alert and you to be on your toes all the time.” In short, there could be no slightest compromise with perfection and that meant auditing of hairbreadth precision, mandating one auditor tool in particular—the E‑Meter. Here, then, is where Mr. Hubbard provides a consummate description of every facet in metering. Here is how the meter registers the thetan’s effect on matter, energy, space and time, here is the why behind a theta bop, here, too, is recognition of cases by meter reaction. It is all here. L. Ron Hubbard presents the how and why of meter use and meter phenomena to locate and handle overts and withholds, thereby restoring responsibility and thus opening the gates to OT.
The Tone Arm is a measure of the amount of responsibility taken by the pc for his existence and for his overts and withholds in general. So this Tone Arm can be said to be—and I now give you a highly important vital datum in the use of an E-Meter and the keynote to all auditing and it is simply this: that the higher the Tone Arm, the less the responsibility for the overts and withholds. —L. Ron Hubbard
If the 1950s culminated with a series of breakthroughs to make broad scale clearing a reality, the 1960s were heralded with discoveries pioneering entirely new realms on the route to Operating Thetan. And with the completion of the 1st Melbourne Advanced Clinical Course and the State of Man Congress—embracing all L. Ron Hubbard had discovered bearing on overts, withholds and the pivotal importance of responsibility in the making of OTs—Scientology entered not just upon a new decade, but a new era.
In terms of how these new developments translated into actual auditing, the technology he had now codified to remove the barriers on that OT path required auditors to be trained to perfection. And to just that end, one auditor tool took on an importance above all others:
“Auditing these days is done with an E-Meter. It’s the only reliable thing you’ve got with regard to auditing that you can count on absolutely.”
Thus, scarcely had 1960 dawned when Mr. Hubbard began delivery of the Hubbard Clearing Scientologist Course in the Academy of the Founding Church in Washington, DC. Those picked to receive this advanced training comprised some 25 top auditors, with the course starting on 4 January.
As a first instruction, they listened to the lectures he had given a few weeks previously to the class of the 1st Melbourne ACC, containing the theory, mechanics and application of his most recent discoveries. Simultaneously, he delivered evening lectures embracing the scope of the E-Meter, set forth and demonstrated exhaustively—a truly consummate description of every conceivable meter phenomena, including how to recognize it, what it meant and, most important, how to apply it in session.
From the fact that the meter registers the thetan’s effect on matter, energy, space, time and his thoughts, to the phenomena of why a theta bop occurs, to how to recognize a case by meter reaction, it is all here. Moreover, and of particular relevance to everything these breakthroughs signified for this culture and planet, the how and why of using the meter to locate overts and withholds and free the being from their adverse effects—and the exact mechanics and phenomena that underlay this technology:
- Rudiments—what they are and why no session ever starts without them;
- Tone Arm—why it is a measure of the responsibility taken by the preclear;
- Reactive Bank—the amount of bank is inversely proportional to the amount of responsibility;
- Ability—how a particular ability can be recovered by handling responsibility;
- Big Overts—why they don’t always read on a meter at first and how one unburdens smaller overts to reach a larger one;
- Identity—the primary button on the track;
- KRC Triangle—how it is used in auditing and why the auditor is senior to all its points;
- Energy—why you can burn coal to produce heat and how this relates to auditing.
As to what these data signified towards clearing and the making of OTs, in a policy soon to be published from Saint Hill, Mr. Hubbard would describe these lectures as the most important course tapes ever issued. While, in regard to all that represented:
“It has taken nearly ten years for me to build a better bridge. Well, I have no qualms about this one. It will stand any loads and stresses. We know the basic buttons of aberration full and finally. And all too truly you will never be the same again.”
Also included is a recorded message from L. Ron Hubbard of 11 March 1960 containing data directly related to the HCS Course. It was addressed to students of a South African ACC which was comprised of a replay of the HCS and 1st Melbourne ACC lectures. Titled “Special Course Tape—South African ACC,” this recording has never been available and is presented here for the first time.
The choice of actions and decisions requires skill and wisdom, not just self-interest or just group interest. Containing 21 precepts, The Way to Happiness helps guide one in those choices encountered in life. This might be the first nonreligious moral code based wholly on common sense.
True joy and happiness are valuable.
If one does not survive, no joy and no happiness are obtainable.
Trying to survive in a chaotic, dishonest and generally immoral society is difficult.
Any individual or group seeks to obtain from life what pleasure and freedom from pain that they can.
Your own survival can be threatened by the bad actions of others around you.
Your own happiness can be turned to tragedy and sorrow by the dishonesty and misconduct of others.
I am sure you can think of instances of this actually happening. Such wrongs reduce one's survival and impair one's happiness.
You are important to other people. You are listened to. You can influence others.
The happiness or unhappiness of others you could name is important to you. Without too much trouble, using this book, you can help them survive and lead happier lives.
While no one can guarantee that anyone else can be happy, their chances of survival and happiness can be improved. And with theirs, yours will be.
It is in your power to point the way to a less dangerous and happier life.
From L. Ron Hubbard’s discovery of the four factors requisite to any auditing session—Help, Control, Communication and Interest—came a new era of case gain extending up from the bottom of The Bridge. Known as the Deadly Quartet, these factors furnished both the means to eliminate the barriers to case advance and a powerful dissemination tool. Before Interest can awaken, the other three factors must be addressed, and in particular that greatest ability of the human race and make‑break point of a being—Help. After demonstrating the Deadly Quartet in the London Congress on Dissemination & Help, Mr. Hubbard provided the technology for starting a preclear upward with Presessioning, the processes and procedures to get anyone in session: willing to be helped, under the control of an auditor, in communication and interested in own case. Moreover, here is his first fully embracive statement on auditor presence and altitude—essential factors enabling the preclear to confront his case, and bringing into practical reality the auditing maxim: Auditor plus pc is greater than bank. As Mr. Hubbard’s only ACC at Saint Hill, this is where he codified modern auditing. It therefore stands as his premier ACC for all auditors.
Program number 1 for the United Kingdom starts at 7:30 tomorrow morning at the Charing Cross–Embankment Underground where the bus leaves for Saint Hill. That’s when that program starts. —L. Ron Hubbard
That program, as announced to attendees of the London Congress on Dissemination & Help, would span the next four weeks and encompass twenty-five L. Ron Hubbard lectures. It further would go down in Scientology history as the start of a new era of case gain—extending from the very bottom of The Bridge.
All unfolded from Mr. Hubbard’s early 1960 discovery of four factors requisite to any auditing session. Which is to say, these are factors which, if omitted, prevented any session from taking place at all. Hence, here were the components defining the term “in session” with a practical thoroughness that had never before been achieved. These factors—Help, Control, Communication and Interest—soon became colloquially known amongst Saint Hill auditors as the “Deadly Quartet,” owing to their telling impact on the barriers to case advance.
Indeed, so pervasive were these factors that they even addressed and handled the reasons why a person who had never heard of Scientology was not in session, thus bringing a new and powerful tool to the cause of dissemination.
So it was, on August 8, that bus rolled onto the Saint Hill grounds bearing the students who would now vanguard this new era. Over that next month, they were to hear lectures truly monumental in scope. These, in fact, are his first fully embracive statement on auditor presence and altitude—essential factors by which an auditor gets the preclear to confront his case, thus bringing into practical reality one of the oldest auditing maxims: Auditor plus pc is greater than bank.
Here, too, is the full technology of Presessioning, the processes and procedures to get anyone fully in session—that is, willing to be helped, in the control of an auditor, in communication and interested in own case. While, in what amounted to Mr. Hubbard’s overriding datum, he spoke of the ability to help as the greatest of human abilities. And, the destructive power of a being’s own failures to help.
And were that not enough, he detailed a host of other fundamentals:
- Auditor Requirements—why one not only has to know how to do a rote procedure, but must understand what is going on in a session;
- Skill in Auditing—the ease and smoothness of handling a preclear while auditing directly monitors the degree of concentration he can put upon his case;
- Help—why it is the greatest ability of the human race;
- Failure to Help—why it is the main background and fundamental and core of a pc’s case;
- Havingness—the reasons one opens a case with it, the difference between Subjective and Objective Havingness and why Objective Havingness changes the profile or prepares a case;
- Paralleling the Mind—what it is and how it is done in auditing;
- Security Checking—underlying theory of why it is used to get a preclear’s case in shape;
- Assessment—if a terminal is precisely assessed it will rise and fall when running. No change of Tone Arm means the auditor is not processing the right terminal;
- Confidence in the Auditor—the more confidence the pc has in the auditor, the steeper the rises and falls of the Tone Arm;
- Other-determinism—the most elementary mechanic of auditing is that other-determinism is furnished and tends to run out some of the other-determinism on the pc’s bank just by the auditor sitting there. The auditor could go through the motions of auditing and something would happen to the case, even without running a process;
- Atomic Fission—the only reason a person is afraid of atomic fission is that it develops tremendous motion;
- Motion—why, when a process on motion is run, withholds start stripping off.
Finally, and to cap it, Mr. Hubbard presented Theory 67, a breakthrough on the Sixth and Seventh Dynamics providing new insight into beingness, havingness and why a thetan introverts into the mest universe.
Here, then, is the historic 1st Saint Hill Advanced Clinical Course, signaling the dawn of what L. Ron Hubbard called “the jet age of Scientology.”
With clearing technology developed and the means to train auditors to use it, HGCs were cracking cases one for one. The era of invariable and uniform results had arrived. As L. Ron Hubbard told the 22nd American ACC, “We have merely charted a route not only through life so a fellow can pilot it, we have also charted a route through the data we have found out about life so that you can bring somebody off rather rapidly.” From that perspective, he had now decided to open the gates to new people. And with an exact course to greet them, fully presented at the Anatomy of the Human Mind Congress, came an exact session to audit them. Specifically, a Model Session, with Mr. Hubbard teaching the first‑ever script. Here is data of such paramount importance he told auditors not to learn it cold, but “hot, hot, hot!” And with the goal to create superlative professionals, he provided detailed instruction on everything, from present time problems and why they deny preclears reality on the back track, to the full mechanics of the reactive bank. While as for the importance of these lectures, Mr. Hubbard would order their study by every one of those case‑cracking HGCs.
But when you get to a Formula, you are running by Model Session, by the script. And you’ve got to have that down much, much better than you ever learned the Ten Commandments, because people’s lives depend on the Model Session script. —L. Ron Hubbard
It was January 1961 and Mr. Hubbard’s Advanced Clinical Course program of Research and Development was accelerating to both a conclusion and a pinnacle of achievement not previously envisioned. For having developed the technology to bring every being to Clear, he’d also developed the procedures to train every auditor to apply that technology. Whereupon, and almost without taking a breath, he turned his attention to the last and crucial step. Because, and what was manifest, the only thing left that could prevent every being from achieving freedom was simply and only if they yet didn’t avail themselves of it. Hence, the technology of Presessioning to bring every being to enlightenment and put them in session (London Congress on Dissemination & Help). And with these techniques put to practice in auditing application (1st Saint Hill ACC), it truly was a new plateau—cases cracked one-for-one and the dawn of the era of invariable and uniform results. So it was that L. Ron Hubbard could now “throw the switch” on dissemination and open the gates to new people flooding into Scientology. With a precise and exact course to do it (Anatomy of the Human Mind Congress) he was about to provide the precise and exact session for when they arrived. Indeed, not just something applicable to a particular process but, rather, the procedure for every session.
Specifically, on 2 January 1961 in Washington, DC, and with the commencement of the 22nd American Advanced Clinical Course, Mr. Hubbard would now teach the first-ever script for a “Model Session.” It was data so pivotal he told the 22nd ACC students he did not want them to learn it cold. No—he wanted it learned “hot, hot, hot!” Indeed, those auditors were about to be tested to the mettle. For with script in hand, there was no excuse for anything less than exact application of an exact technology:
“A Model Session must be perfect. If anybody gets out of this Unit without being able to do a perfect session from beginning to end, I’m going to ask them to turn in their thetan. You hear me now. Quite important.
“The script is important. You’re so used to having the auditing command exact that you don’t notice that the script has got to be exact, see. So get that down. Get that pat.”
And with the goal to generate from the 22nd ACC a new crop of auditors who could crack and clear any case, he provided detailed instruction to make each a master of auditing technology. From the history, purpose and use of the E-Meter, especially regarding Tone Arm and needle reactions, to the full mechanics of the reactive bank, to present time problems and why they deny a preclear reality on the back track—here was a truly comprehensive sweep of everything an auditor needed to create stable case gain and move cases forward to Clear:
- Formula, Presession, Regimen—what each does and the relationship between them;
- Havingness Process—how to test for it, and its purpose to stabilize the pc in PT;
- Present Time Problems—how they prevent reality on the back track;
- Forgettingness—how it is a withhold from self;
- Overts and Withholds—a description of the exact mechanism, and how Overt/Withhold works as a Havingness Process;
- Presession 37—what it does and how it is audited;
- Help—its use, and why it is the last rung of sanity;
- Dianetic Assists—their use in Presessioning.
In testament to what was achieved, when the skills of those auditors were applied to a series of slow moving cases, the difference in terms of accelerated gain is best characterized by L. Ron Hubbard’s own comment that all were now “moving like startled gazelles.” While befitting the importance of these lectures, Mr. Hubbard would order them as mandatory study for every one of those case-cracking HGCs.
Through seven and a half years, in addition to all else demanding his attention, L. Ron Hubbard had delivered more than 1,000 Advanced Clinical Courses and Professional Course lectures—a body of technology delineating every conceivable aspect of the mind and spirit and mapping the route to higher states. And now he embarked on the task of overcoming the only remaining barrier: cracking the toughest of “tough” cases. Convened immediately following the South African Anatomy Congress, the 3rd South African ACC is where Mr. Hubbard taught the Pre-Havingness Scale, a new assessment scale oriented around the make‑break point of a case. Trained on processes utilizing this scale, ACC auditors made short work of the “toughest” of those “tough” cases, cracking every one in four weeks. Yet all of this culminated in a development that, in his words, “made history”—Goals and Goals Assessment. For not only did the technology L. Ron Hubbard taught on this last ACC launch an avalanche straight to Clear, but SOP Goals led directly to an entirely new and pivotal echelon of auditor training—the commencement of the legendary Saint Hill Special Briefing Course and the final accomplishment of The Bridge we have today.
What we have learned in the past more aptly fits in the future. The development of Dianetics and Scientology has if anything been backwards. It went from a medium high to a very high and then started downscale trying to find the undercut and where people lived. Well, we’re there now, we’ve got the undercuts and we know where people live. Well, just remember that the remainder of it has all been developed in the past and that you have it already. So don’t lose the old data and say, “Well, Ron changed his mind all the time.” No, Ron has just been seeking new lows and we’ve got it now.
The data which you have been taught on this ACC you will find broadly usable. I’m very confident that it could continue to be broadly used for a very, very long time. —L. Ron Hubbard
In seven and a half years, in addition to all else that demanded his attention in terms of administration and expansion, L. Ron Hubbard had delivered 22 ACCs, giving a total of 931 lectures delineating every conceivable aspect of the mind and spirit and mapping the route to higher states. If the achievement inspires awe for its unprecedented scope, of even greater significance is what those lectures represent—a body of technology that will stand forever as a gateway to freedom for all beings on Earth, in this and every succeeding generation.
And now, starting on 23 January 1961, Mr. Hubbard would teach the 3rd South African Advanced Clinical Course in Johannesburg. This first and only ACC he delivered in South Africa was also the last ACC he ever delivered. For it not only put the finishing touches and concluding exclamation mark on one entire phase of research and development, it marked the watershed starting point for the next.
The back story of how he came to South Africa is the culmination of all he had sought to achieve since he launched the first Advanced Clinical Course in October 1953. Specifically, auditing technology to move any case up to Clear, and training procedures to make all auditors capable of accomplishing that goal with any preclear. With the breakthrough of Presessioning and the Regimens (1st Saint Hill ACC), combined with Model Session and a new standard of auditing procedure (22nd American ACC), HGCs throughout the world were now advancing cases to Clear regularly and with velocity.
At which point, as Mr. Hubbard was to relate, came the realization that it was cases initially cracked that was the remaining obstacle in the drive toward broad clearing.
“It’s a very dangerous thing for an incomplete body of knowledge to be extant. And that means that you can’t leave out one case here and one case there and say, ‘Well, we’re getting the percentage of cases and that’s all fine.’ No, that’s not good enough. That’s not even half good enough. That’s a very poor thing. You leave out one case and you’ve caved in the ruddy lot. So that’s what I’ve been going toward.
“Now consistent with this, the more gains that are made by undercutting, the more speed is added to clearing.”
And where better to discover the launch point for every case than South Africa, a country with an active and expanding field, yet a unique set of circumstances:
“Cases—South Africa—were the roughest cases in the world by my experience. We had had these cases scattered through Central Organizations and so forth for a long time.”
Thus, in September 1960, he flew to Johannesburg. Having acquired a modern house overlooking the city, he immediately embarked on what he described as an all-out research program. With the Johannesburg HGC as his testing ground, and under his supervision, by the end of two and a half months its auditors were cracking every case that walked in the door—quite literally, by the dozens. Hence, his later comment, “You never saw anything as cocky right now as a Johannesburg HGC auditor.”
Yet a razor sharp HGC was only the start of what L. Ron Hubbard brought to South Africa. With word of mouth spreading like a bush fire, he convened the South African Anatomy Congress before 500 Scientologists—the largest Congress to date—where he announced a program to make every man, woman and child in the nation as able as possible, as fast as possible.
And so began the 3rd South African ACC—to train the country’s best auditors to accomplish that very objective. For quite in addition to all else it meant to receive personalized auditor instruction and supervision from Mr. Hubbard, he had also made a pivotal breakthrough—a new assessment scale oriented around what he had identified as the make-break point of a case:
“I was writing it down and all of a sudden said, ‘Well, holy cats, that’s a Havingness Scale. What do you know? Those are the reasons why people can’t have.’”
Thus, his development of the Pre-Havingness Scale, coalescing all he had discovered about the factors that prevented a preclear from being fully in session. Trained by Ron on processes that utilized this scale, those ACC auditors made short work of the “toughest” cases—cracking every one in four weeks. All the while with L. Ron Hubbard teaching a panoply of related technical developments providing the background and underlying theory, including:
- South African Rundown—its release, and the story of how the technology to handle the factor of Help formed the basis of this rundown;
- Change, Education and Processing—why they are called the Three Therapies of Earth and how change and education relate to processing;
- Point of Reference—why a case, to be stable, must have a point of reference, and why that point of reference is the present time mest universe;
- Dissemination—the role of the Pre-Havingness Scale as a method of contacting new public;
- Memory—it is not stored but created;
- Creativeness—what the bank has to do with it, and how auditing uninhibits the creativeness of the individual.
And all culminating in yet another development, one that, in his own words, “made history”—Goals and Goals Assessment. In point of fact, what it meant for cases was so monumental he would direct all staff around the world to be audited on SOP Goals, regardless of all former auditing—quite simply because it was now the fastest route to Clear.
Whereas L. Ron Hubbard accomplished everything he had set out to do in South Africa—new PE programs successfully implemented that would be exported internationally, a new office established in Cape Town and expansion in Durban, all in addition to the technical gains—there is an even greater finale. For not only did this final ACC launch an avalanche to Clear, it led directly to what would follow from an HCO Information Letter Mr. Hubbard issued from Saint Hill the very next month:
“With the advent of Standard Operating Procedure Goals, which has now shown its ability to make Releases or Clears of all cases on the 3rd South African ACC and in HGCs, it is necessary that persons from various parts of the world be given an opportunity to study all materials on this technology and be specially briefed in its use and receive enough auditing on it under close supervision to have a full reality on its results.”
And what that heralded was an entirely new echelon of auditor training—the commencement of the legendary Saint Hill Special Briefing Course and the final accomplishment of The Bridge we have today.
